Roof flashing is a construction term used to describe thin pieces of material installed on a roof to direct water away from critical areas where it could cause damage. The primary purpose of flashing is to prevent water infiltration and protect vulnerable areas of a roof from leaks.

Flashing is typically made of metal, such as aluminum or galvanized steel, but it can also be composed of other materials like plastic or rubber. It is strategically placed in areas where different roof surfaces meet or where there are interruptions in the roof structure, such as around chimneys, vents, skylights, and dormers.

Common types of roof flashing include:

  1. Step flashing: Used where a sloped roof meets a vertical wall, such as around chimneys.

  2. Chimney flashing: Wraps around the base of a chimney to prevent water from entering the roof.

  3. Vent pipe flashing: Installed around plumbing vent pipes to create a watertight seal.

  4. Valley flashing: Placed in roof valleys where two roof slopes meet to channel water away.

  5. Dormer flashing: Protects the joint between the dormer and the main roof.

Properly installed flashing is crucial for maintaining a watertight and weather-resistant roof. It helps prevent water damage, rot, and mold by directing rainwater away from vulnerable areas and ensuring it flows down the roof and into the gutters or downspouts. Regular inspection and maintenance of flashing are essential to ensure its effectiveness over time.
